A number of our brides come to us after already having alterations done elsewhere—sometimes just days before their wedding, asking for help.
We deeply respect fellow tailors and believe many do wonderful work. However, we encourage every bride to be mindful during fittings and watch for certain red flags.
Your wedding dress should make you feel both stunning and comfortable on your big day. That’s our wish for every bride in the world.
Alteration No-No’s Every Bride Should Know
1. They don’t pin or mark your garment during fitting
If a tailor guesses instead of carefully pinning and measuring, it’s a sign of carelessness.
2. They rush you through the consultation
A good tailor listens, explains the plan, and sets clear expectations. Rushing = red flag.
3. They can’t explain what they’re doing
If you ask about a change and get vague or defensive answers, it may show lack of skill or transparency.
4. No pricing upfront
A professional tailor gives a clear estimate before starting. Avoid surprise charges.
5. They say it’s okay if the dress feels uncomfortable or painful
Boning, cups, or structure should never hurt. A properly tailored dress fits securely, not painfully.
6. The dress ends up too short or too long without any length request
If no special length was requested, your dress should be tailored to standard floor length — not ankle or trailing unnecessarily.
7. Bustle is uneven, bulky, or longer than the back of the dress
The bustle should match the front length of the dress (slightly longer is acceptable). Sides should stay even and not hang below the back hem.
8. The dress is too loose and doesn’t stay in place
If you constantly need to adjust the neckline, bodice, or straps, the fit is not right. A proper alteration should hold the dress in place comfortably and securely.
